LPRng

The LPRng print spooler is an enhanced, extended, and portable implementation of the Berkeley lpr print spooler. It provides the same interface and meets RFC1179 requirements, but is completely independent.

LPRng supports the following features: lightweight (no databases needed) lpr, lpc, and lprm programs; dynamic redirection of print queues; printer pooling and load balancing; automatic job holding; highly verbose diagnostics; client programs do not need to run SETUID root; enhanced security checks; load balancing across multiple printers; and an improved permission and authorization mechanism.
