VIPS

VIPS is a free image processing system. It's very bad at photo retouching, but it's great (much better than programs like Photoshop) at all the other things you use Photoshop for. It's particularly good with large images (i.e., images larger than the amount of RAM in your machine), and for working with colour.

VIPS (for VASARI Image Processing Software) is the image-processing library that does all the heavy lifting. nip is a graphical user interface for VIPS.
