It acts as a caching pre-processor to C/C++ compilers, using the -E compiler switch and a hash to detect when a compilation can be satisfied from cache. When the same code is compiled again the cached output is used, giving a significant speedup (typically 5x). You can also create symbolic links from your compiler's name to ccache; this lets you use ccache without any changes to your build system. 'Ccache' produces the same output that the real compiler would, including the same object files and compiler warnings that the real compiler would produce.
