|Short description=UNIX-like monolithic kernel liberated and adopted by the GNU system
|Full description=Linux is a portable, monolithic kernel and a collection of device drivers that can currently runs on hundreds of different computer platforms, including microcontrollers and other embedded systems. When combined with the GNU System it forms the GNU/Linux operating system. The main version of the Linux kernel that is being maintained by Linus Torvalds, Andrew Morton, et al., contains proprietary code in the form of binary blobs, so in the interest of freedom, we maintain GNU Linux-libre, in which this proprietary code is removed, so that it is entirely free software.

It removes non-free components from Linux, that are disguised as source code or distributed in separate files. It also disables run-time requests for non-free components, shipped separately or as part of Linux, and documentation pointing to them.

The GNU Linux-libre project takes a minimal-changes approach to cleaning up Linux, making no effort to substitute components that need to be removed with functionally equivalent free/libre ones.

GNU Linux-libre

https://www.gnu.org/software/linux-libre/
A free (as in freedom) variant of the Linux kernel.

Linux-libre is a modified version of Linux with all of the binary blobs, obfuscated code and portions of code under proprietary licenses removed.

Currently Linux-libre is maintained and published by the Free Software Foundation Latin America. This is a GNU package.

Packaging

Linux-libre is available in most of the FSF-endorsed distros on https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html and the lastest versions are packages in Guix and Parabola GNU/Linux-libre. Linux-libre can also be installed on GNU/Linux distributions that use APT from jxself's APT repository: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

Notes

The kernel consists of code under many licenses. Although there is some code in the kernel under GPLv2-or-later being combined with the kernel's other GPLv2-only code, the effective license GPLv2-only, not GPLv2-or-later.
