|Full description=Linux is a portable, monolithic kernel and a collection of device drivers that can currently runs on hundreds of different computer platforms, including microcontrollers and other embedded systems. When combined with the GNU System it forms the GNU/Linux operating system. The main version of the Linux kernel that is being maintained by Linus Torvalds, Andrew Morton, et al., contains proprietary code in the form of binary blobs, so in the interest of freedom, we maintain GNU Linux-libre, in which this proprietary code is removed, so that it is entirely free software.

GNU Linux-libre

http://linux-libre.fsfla.org
Linux-libre is a Free version of the kernel Linux suitable for use with the GNU Operating System.

It removes non-Free components from Linux, that are disguised as source code or distributed in separate files. It also disables run-time requests for non-Free components, shipped separately or as part of Linux, and documentation pointing to them.

The GNU Linux-libre project takes a minimal-changes approach to cleaning up Linux, making no effort to substitute components that need to be removed with functionally equivalent Free ones.
