Project to produce a free COBOL compiler

GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL) is a free, modern COBOL compiler. It implements a substantial portion of the COBOL 85, COBOL 2002 and COBOL 2014 standards, as well as many extensions included in other COBOL compilers.

GnuCOBOL translates COBOL into C and compiles the translated code using a native C compiler.

GnuCOBOL was named GNU Cobol from September 2013 (where the project moved to GNU space) to September 2014. Before becoming a GNU project the name was OpenCOBOL with the same free spirit under GPL/LGPL it has now.

N.B. The Cobol for GCC project (GNU COBOL) is also an effort to integrate it into the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). For more information, see
