Many projects are currently looking for a team captain, so please take them on if you are interested. All project teams are looking for new volunteers as well.

* '''Summary''': The addons.mozilla.org website, hosted on Mozilla servers, offers many addons to extend FireFox with additional features. The majority of these addons are not developed directly by Mozilla but by third party developers. Many of these addons don't explicitly define a license, even if the original author thought it was unnecessary, so they can't be considered Free Software. Because of this issue, the GNU IceCat browser can't advise users to install and use them, in general. Below is the list of addons that we have checked to be Free.

This project catalogs these plugins on the Directory.

Revision as of 16:00, 8 August 2018

This page is for cataloging larger or important projects on the Directory. These can be projects to fix a particular issue, or organizing a team to focus on improving a certain category of software. This page lists current projects, their team captains, and a brief summary of the project. You can also add your own project, or add a project as a suggestion that someone else could take and run with. Many projects are currently looking for a team captain, so please take them on if you are interested. All project teams are looking for new volunteers as well.

Free Software Directory (Savannah)

  • Team Captain: Free Software Foundation
  • Summary: The project enables us to import package information from free software repositories. Long ago a friend put together scripts that we used to import thousands of entries. But thousands upon thousands more could be added if we update the program to synchronize scripts. The project has been sitting idle for a while now at <https://savannah.gnu.org/p/directory>, just waiting for volunteers to jump in and refine it.

SPDX Group

  • Team Captain:
  • Summary: SPDX offers machine readable license identifiers <https://spdx.org/licenses/>. We want to use these identifiers here on the Directory. Currently when selecting a license, users are given options with different license identifiers. We want to update that to use the SPDX identifiers, as well as using them elsewhere on the site.

Backlog Admin Group

Translators

  • Team Captain:
  • Summary: A group dedicated to translate unique pages.

Antifeatures

  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: Antifeatures are flags applied to applications to warn of issues that may be undesirable from the user's perspective. Frequently it is behavior that benefits the developer, but that the end user of the software would prefer not to be there.

Bitcoin Donations

  • Team Captain:
  • Summary: Many free software projects accept Bitcoins or other cryptocurrency as donations. This team is working to make clear which projects on the Directory accept Bitcoin.

Free software replacements

  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: A listing of free software replacements.

Free software evaluation

  • Summary: A page used to evaluate if suspected software is nonfree so we can remove them from the Directory or avoid to add them.

Golden Oldies

  • Team Captain:
  • Summary: This project focuses on making sure that entries don't get too out of date. This team goes through entries that haven't been updated in a few years and checks to see if there are updates that can be made.

Software repositories

Free Mozilla-based programs

GNU IceCat

IceCat WebExtensions (proposed)
  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: The addons.mozilla.org website, hosted on Mozilla servers, offers many addons to extend FireFox with additional features.
3rd-party data for IceCat add-ons
  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: This collection do not contain 3rd party softwares, only 3rd party data files that are used with the listed softwares.
IceCat plugins
  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: IceCat plugins installable as packages from free GNU/Linux distributions like Trisquel GNU/Linux. In most cases plugins are unnecessary in web browsers so using a separate browser profile with plugins enabled for sites that require them is recommended for security. This project catalogs these plugins on the Directory.

Icedove

Icedove extensions (proposed)
  • Team Captain: David Hedlund
  • Summary: This page lists proposed Icedove add-ons, except add-ons that are also compatible with GNU IceCat (except uBlock Origin and Master Password+).

Iridium extensions (proposed)

Miscellaneous extensions

  • Team Captain: Position available
  • Summary: This project is for cataloging extensions for other programs that maybe don't have enough work involved to be an independent project.

GNU/Linux package repositories

Not all packages in these distributions are free, we need to evaluate them.

Black Arch GNU/Linux Tools (proposed)
