A Vim-inspired file manager for the console
Ranger is a console file manager with Vi key bindings. It provides a minimalistic curses interface with a view on the directory hierarchy. It visualises the directory tree in two dimensions: the directory hierarchy on one side and a list of files on the other. It also provides a preview on the right side of the interface.
It ships with 'Rifle', a file launcher that automatically determines which program to use for what file type.
The default keys are similar to those of Vim, Emacs and Midnight Commander, although Ranger is controllable with just the arrow keys or mouse.
Features include:
- Multi-column display
- Common file operations (create/chmod/copy/delete/...)
- Renaming multiple files at once
- Preview of the selected file/directory
- Vim-like console and hotkeys
- Automatically determine file types and run them with correct programs
- Change the directory of your shell after exiting ranger
- Tabs, bookmarks, mouse support
