Taler is a pure payment system, not a new crypto-currency. As such, it operates in a traditional banking context. In particular, this means that in order to receive funds via Taler, the merchant must have a regular bank account, and payments can be executed in ordinary currencies such as USD or EUR. Similarly, the Taler exchange must interact with a bank. The bank of the exchange holds the exchange’s funds in an escrow account.

GNU Taler

https://www.gnu.org/software/taler/
Advanced electronic payment system for privacy-preserving payments.

Taler is an electronic payment system providing anonymity for customers. Payments can in principle be made in any existing currency, or a bank can be launched to support new currencies. Merchants are not anonymous, and--due to income-transparency--the state can perform effective tax audits.

With Taler, users can finally have a transparent, trustworthy and truly private online banking environment they get to choose themselves.

Documentation

This project was funded through the NGI0 PET Fund, a fund established by NLnet with financial support from the European Commission's Next Generation Internet programme.

For now, the team is in discussions with several regular banks as well as several central banks about the project, so there are currently no products in the market. The project is still in an early stage.
