Trademark issue

Summary Article by Bone-Baboon

The conversation about the Rust trademark policy issue has been happening on several mailing lists and in different IRC channels. I decided to write a new summary that bringing it all together, adds new information and cleans it up.

The summary is located at <https://bonebaboon.tilde.site/rust-trademark-policy-issue/>.

The Git repository for the summary that can be cloned is at <https://bonebaboon.tilde.site/git/rust-trademark-policy-issue.git>.

There is also a website for browsing the source code at <https://bonebaboon.tilde.site/git/rust-trademark-policy-issue/>.

Issue threads

There are issue threads on Rust's GitHub repositories about the trademark issue:

Forks/rebranding

Are there any active forks of Rust that change the name, such that it and projects depending on it could be considered free software, e.g. for inclusion in this directory? --Cel1 (talk) 16:39, 31 October 2021 (EDT)

What segment of the packages need to be changed?

I am aware GUIX has many different version of Rust in their repository: https://guix.gnu.org/en/packages/rust-1.50.0/ (on the Internet Archive)
.
The Rust and Cargo logs are under Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY) [ 1].
.
They have a segment discussing the trademark, but it appears most of it is licensed in a way that you can use the project name and logo as long as you aren't using it to represent your own project. [ 1]
.
Mozilla does have a policy stating 'Distributing a modified version of the Rust programming language or the Cargo package manager and calling it Rust or Cargo requires explicit, written permission from the Rust core team.', which I would assume could impact the possibility of forking and redistributing the code ( without removing where rust/cargo are mentioned)?[ 1] .
Is this talk thread about removing the Rust name from those packages in GNU GUIX? What segments of the Rust packages should be removed to better fit the FSF's philosophy?

Importance to Redox and other Rust Centric Operating Systems Seeking FSDG Certification

The Operating System Redox, endorses the Free System Distribution Guidelines [1] and works hard to stay compliant with them.
How does this affect operating systems such as Redox? What can we do to make sure software is compliant?
