This page documents my suggestions for creating a well-structured "License check" guide to be used for all packages under review. Once a good guide is up and running, it should be directly maintained and monitored by the FSF Licensing & Compliance Lab.

Name

Suggested names:

  • Freedom check (preferable, because
  • License check
  • License freedom check

Goals

This guide should:

  • Create a clear, checkbox-style review process to determine FSD eligibility.
  • Create step by step tutorials on how to use licensing tools.
  • Record all known (good and bad) practices for license use and attribution, even edge cases.
  • Instruct how to open issues in project pages to tackle any problem.

Separate projects

This guide is closely related but ultimately different to these goals:

  • Encouraging correct use of licenses and established standards. This is a project that the FSF Licensing & Compliance Lab is working on.
  • Identifying antifeatures. This is a task that is not related to FSD package eligibility.
