I stumbled upon into this page looking for examples of free eID softwares. Unfortunately, this page does not list softwares currently in use. Belgium seems to offer to its citizens an open source eID solution licensed under GPL https://eid.belgium.be/en/linux-eid-software-installation
I believe that there are several countries that offer electronic identification through free software, unfortunately this is not the case in the country where I live. It is unfortunate that one cannot access public services in one's country through free software.
