- Gnuzilla
- GNU IceCat (originally GNU IceWeasel) is part of GNUzilla (the GNU version of the Mozilla Application Suite). GNU IceCat is based on the the current Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR), with removal of trademarked name, trademarked artwork, and proprietary components, and enhanced privacy settings.⚠ Outdated official binary release
Since 2019, IceCat is maintained only as source code. The last IceCat binary release was version 60.7.0, and is no longer supported. Guix and Parabola have up-to-date IceCat binaries. Please ask your distro to package IceCat.However, IceCat is not a straight fork of Firefox ESR; instead, it is a parallel effort that works closely with and re-bases in synchronization on the latest Firefox ESR as the upstream supplier, with patches merged upstream whenever possible; although it should be noted that additional security updates are customized to IceCat occasionally.
Differences between IceCat and Firefox ESR
Important differences between Mozilla's Firefox and GNU IceCat is that IceCat has a focus on freedom and privacy (see settings.js for details).
- Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) is not implemented: Whereas Firefox are being created such that they support Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) systems through their implementation of the Encrypted Media Extension (EME), GNU IceCat doesn't include an EME implementation as it opposes efforts to popularize and ease the dissemination of DRM technology.
- Widevine Content Decryption Module provided by Google Inc. is not installed in about:addons > Plugins
- The Play DRM-controlled content option (used to download and enable Widevine Content Decryption Module provided by Google Inc.) has been removed from about:preferences > Content
- "Accept third-party cookies: Never"
- WebRTC is enabled like in Firefox but prevent leaking the LAN ip. (Test WebRTC)
- The proprietary web chat IRC client Mibbit has been removed.
- Telemetry is disabled.
- DuckDuckGo is the default search engine, which means that you can run "!Bangs" keywords in the location bar to use any search engine.

History
GNU IceCat was formerly known as GNU IceWeasel but changed its name in 2008 to avoid confusion with Debian IceWeasel (who was rebranded back to Firefox in 2017 after Debian was being granted special permission from Mozilla ref).
The GNU IceCat developers dropped support for IceCatMobile on Replicant after version 38.6.0 because these builds are already provided by F-Droid. See Collection:Replicant for more information about IceCatMobile in the F-Droid repository.
GNU IceCat developers dropped support for macOS, and Windows, after version 38.8.0 in 2016: "Note that building binary packages for Windows and macOS currently requires non-free software, so we no longer distribute binary releases for those platforms."

- Icecast is a streaming media server which currently supports WebM and Ogg streaming including the Opus, Vorbis and Theora codecs. Also Icecast can handle other streams like MP3/AAC/NSV in legacy mode, but this is not officially supported. Later, Icecast 2 brought improved metadata support, compatibility with Shoutcast clients, and more advanced configuration options, which were features that lead to widespread adoption in the internet radio community.

- Kid3 lets you easily and automatically tag MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MPC, MP4/AAC, MP2, Opus, Speex, TrueAudio, WavPack, WMA, WAV and AIFF files (e.g. full albums), while supporting both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags.
- LBRY Desktop
- An application to browse the decentralized LBRY network. It is developed by LBRY Inc. and is the main program for browsing LBRY.
- Libav
- Libav is a complete, cross-platform solution to decode, encode, record, convert and stream audio and video. This package contains the avplay multimedia player, the avserver streaming server, the avconv audio and video encoder, and the avprobe stream analyzer. They support most existing file formats (AVI, MPEG, OGG, Matroska, ASF...) and encoding formats (MPEG, DivX, MPEG4, AC3, DV...). Additionally, it contains the qt-faststart utility which rearranges Quicktime files to facilitate network streaming. This package also serves as a replacement for the former 'ffmpeg' package.

- MediaCrush is a media sharing server and Web service. You can upload images, sound and videos in convenient ways. Many free clients are available for it, as well as browser add-ons.
- Mpd-configure
- The mpd-configure bash script creates a valid configuration file for mpd, optimised for bit perfect playback of any digital audio file, including those of high resolution. With default settings the script uses the first available alsa audio interface by using its hardware address (in the form of hw:x,y), and has automagic procedures for things like the music directory and directory where files are stored, the number of items in the music direcory and the UPNP name. When multiple audio interfaces are found, the user is presented with a choice.
- Mpd-monitor
- `mpd-monitor` is a bash script which displays the properties of an audio stream as played by Music Player Daemon (mpd). Besides the common mpd meta values of the current stream, like title, artist and source (url), it displays the detailed audio properties of the source stream or file, the way mpd interprets it, and the way the stream is handled by alsa (and thereforehanded over to the DAC). It can be used as a real life bit-perfectness monitor.
- Mpdired
- MPDired is an Emacs front-end (client) for the Music Player Daemon (mdp) with interactions inspired from Dired. It features two views packed into the same interactive buffer: the browser view and the queue view.
- Mpv
- mpv is a general-purpose audio and video player. It is a fork of mplayer2 and MPlayer. It shares some features with the former projects while introducing many more.

- Mumble is a voice chat program. There are two modules in Mumble: the client (Mumble) and the server (Murmur). It provides encrypted, low-latency voice chat. Supports group conferences, for talking amongst friends: has a mute/deafen feature, also supports textchat. A suitable free software replacement for Google Hangout, Skype, Ventrillo, TeamSpeak and many more.
- NCine
- A cross-platform 2D game engine powered by Lua and C++. Supports a solid range of platforms as well as many features such as Lua integration for scripting, a C++11 compliant codebase, spritesheet support, Tracy profiler integration and more.
- Natron
- Video compositing software. Node-graph based. Similar in functionalities to Adobe After Effects and Nuke by The Foundry.
- Ncmpc
- ncmpc is a fully featured MPD client, which runs in a terminal (using ncurses). Its goal is to provide a keyboard oriented and consistent interface to MPD, without wasting resources. - Strawberry
- Strawberry is a music player and music collection organizer. It's based on Clementine with the Amarok 1.4 look and feel especially aimed at audiophiles. The name is inspired by the band Strawbs.
- Surge
- Surge, now called Surge XT, is one of the most popular digital synths used by the free software community. In Surge, each patch contains two scenes which are separate instances of the entire synthesis engine (except effects) that can be used to create layered or split patches. It features 3 oscillators per scene, with 12 versatile oscillator algorithms (Classic, Modern, Wavetable, Window, Sine, FM2, FM3, String, Twist, Alias, S&H Noise and Audio Input), 2 filter units in 8 different configurations and 12 LFO units (6 are per voice and 6 global for the whole scene). Surge was renamed to "Surge XT" after it was entirely rewritten in JUCE.
- Tribler
- It allows you to watch videos and download content. Tribler aims to combine the ease of Youtube.com with the performance of peer-to-peer. Tribler is backwards compatible with the BitTorrent download protocol. To discover interesting content standard RSS feeds with .torrent links are supported plus the "Tribe protocol" which automatically scans the network for available BitTorrent swarms upon startup. Tribler uses an embedded web browser to access video clips of Youtube.com and Liveleak.com. Other features are "People who like this also like" for recommending related swarms, the ability to make friends, and to donate idle upload capacity to friends. The later can improve download speed by a factor of two on asymmetric Internet links. The fastest way of social file sharing.
- Unified XUL Platform
- UXP is a unified application platform for XUL-based applications. It is a hard fork from the Mozilla code repository (mozilla-central) with an ESR-52 fork point. In addition to further development based on the Mozilla upstream code, and selective cherry-picking of directly-applicable patches, it has its own development and holds the base for a maintained platform to be used by XUL applications.
- VLC media player
- VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, WebM, WMV, MP3, Ogg, as well as numerous others) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
- Vital
- Vital is a modular visual synthesizer with animated controls, filter responses, waveforms, smooth LFOs, oscilloscopes, spectrograms, and more. It is GPU optimized and all animations run at 60 FPS. It is a direct competitor to popular proprietary synth Serum. Vital does not accept any pull requests and has some GPL-compatible restrictions. A community fork of Vital is maintained under the name VItalium.
