OpenOffice

With new features, advanced XML capabilities and native support for the OASIS Standard OpenDocument format, OpenOffice.org 2.0 gives users around the globe the tools to be engaged and productive members of their society.

Openoffice includes:

  • Writer: It can do all that other office suites can do...creating documents, reports, newsletters, and brochures etc. It can also create and publish Web content.
  • Calc: This is a spreadsheet facility that allows you to calculate and analyze your data and has tool which allows you to generate charts if you want to show statistics visually.
  • Impress: This is an application that enables you to create slide presentations.
  • Draw: This is an application that allows you to create diagrams and 3D illustrations

The following features in OpenOffice 2.0 can be compiled with GCJ from GNU Classpath:

  • Base (database) and jdbc driver support
  • Document wizards in Writer
  • XML Docbook exporting
  • Other Export Filters
  • Mail merges
  • XSLT filters

The following festures do not work on a Free platform:

  • Accessibility tools
  • movies/sound in documents

The status of the following compoents are currently unknown:

  • Report Autopilot
  • Beanshell scripting
  • UNO bridge
  • For OpenOffice 1.X distributions that only provide Free Software have disabled any components written in the java language.
